Read the Healthy Beverage Guidelines

A group of nutrition experts from across the U.S. reviewed the evidence on beverages and health and ranked categories of beverages into six levels, based on calories delivered, contribution to intake of energy and essential nutrients, and evidence for positive and negative effects on health. The result is the following ranking: Level 1: Water, Level 2: Tea and Coffee, Level 3: Low-Fat and Skim Milk and Soy Beverages, Level 4: Noncalorically Sweetened Beverages, Level 5: Caloric Beverages with Some Nutrients, Level 6: Calorically Sweetened Beverages
